Orang Utan Sepilok Sanctuary

The Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center, located near the town of Sandakan, is one of the best places on earth to see the famous orang utan of Borneo in its natural habitat. Here at the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center, the largest and oldest of its kind on earth, a dedicated team of professionals work tirelessly to assist orphaned, abandoned or abused Orang tans to learn the survival skills they need to return to their natural habitat – the teeming jungles of Borneo.

A raised wooden walkway takes you to the observation deck where Orangutans slowly emerge from the rainforest to be fed by the rangers. The Sepilok centre supplements the rehabilitated Orangutan’s diet with a feeding at 10.00am and 3.00pm. Although there is a high possibility of seeing Orangutans during the feeding time, wildlife sightings can not guaranteed as the Orangutans roam freely in the jungle.

(Sepilok is a nice place along the border of Borneo rainforest and can be reached by car from Sandakan airport in about 30 minutes. There are several eco-lodges in Sepilok, offering accommodation, guided tours in the Borneo rainforest and to nearby Orang Utan research rehabilitation centre)

(To watch the Orang Utan up close in their natural habitate visit world renowned Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in Sandakan. The centre located on over 4000 hectares of lush forest was set up in 1964 to rehabilitateorphaned baby orang utans.)

Regata Lepa-Lepa

Regatta Lepa is a dramatic cultural event held annually in Semporna town, the east coast of Sabah. Regatta Lepa is a festival to celebrates the Bajau tradition for their craftsmanship skilled in hand-made boat making. ‘Lepa’ itself means a ‘boat that hand-made crafted’ in Bajau Semporna language, usually measured about 5-7 meters long. During the Regatta Lepa festivals, there will be a competition of decorative Lepa boats, a battle to show off which Lepa boats are the best.

SIBUAN ISLAND, SEMPORNA SABAH

Sibuan Island, locally known as ‘Battleship Island’ for it‘s extinctive shape, is located app. 45 mins by speed boat from Semporna. Sibuan is one of the smallest islands in the whole bay but it is very popular for swimmers and snorkelers and certainly the most photographed island after Sipadan.

Sipadan Island

Sipadan is the only oceanic island in Malaysia, rising 600m from the seabed. It is in the Celebes Sea, east of the town of Tawau and off the coast of Semporna, Sabah. It was formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct volcanic cone, and took thousand of years to develop. Sipadan is located at the heart of the Indo-Pacific basin, the center of one of the richest marine habitats in the world. More than 3,000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species have been classifield in this ecosystem.

Sipadans’ Secrets

The natural treasures of this island are its greatest assets. Here, you can still find wild deer in secluded coves. Dugongs, a cosin of the American manatees were known to swim the tides, Now they are hardly ever seen but are still held as one of Semporna’s secrets.

Diving Sipadan’s reefs, Jacques Couteau was spellbound. “Go to Sipadan to see the schooling barracuda, to Mabul to see the seahorses and the erodes reefs of Kapalai to marvel at the detritus-like leaf fish” divers were told. Still today you will find turtles nesting under your beach hut on stits and giant coconut crabs climbing the branches of a coconut palm. It has been said thet the number of creatures on these reef surpass that of the tropical rainforest.

Kiulu 4M Challenge

Kiulu is located about 60 km from Kota Kinabalu and is the venue for this traditional sporting challenge. The Kiulu 4M Challenge consists of four traditional sports.

The ‘M’ in 4M stands for the four Kadazandusun sports comprising of managkus (running 6 km), mamangkar (bamboo rafting for 5 km), manampatau (swimming with bamboo for 1.3 lm) and mamarampanau (walking with bamboo stilts for 0.2 km). All four are indigenous, adventurous and thrilling events that will test your physical and mental skills.

Besides being a sport event, the K4MC is also a noble endeavor to protect and preserve nature, in particular the Kiulu River.

Among the objectives of the challenge are to promote traditional sports as an eco-tourism product of Kiulu to create opportunities for active local participation in the tourism industry and instill environmental awareness among the community.

Organizer of the one-day event have also introduced a new category called X-treme 4KMC for men above 21 years old only which involves running and bamboo rafting over a distance of 13 km.

Kampung Penimbawan ni terletak dalam daerah Tuaran Sabah. Sebuah perkampungan biasa di atas air yang dihuni oleh masyarakat tempatan Sabah dari suku kaum Bajau Sama Sabah. Apa yang menarik tentang perkampungan ini kepupusan kampung ini pada suatu hari. Mungkin gambar yang kalian lihat ini adalah gambar terakhir yang boleh kita saksikan tentang keindahan dan keunikkannya, bagaimana pun disebabkan pembangunan dan penambahbaikan taraf hidup, kampung ini akan ditinggalkan dan masyarakat yang tinggal di kampung ini akan ditempatkan disebuah penempatan baru yang lebih teratur dan sistematik. Tidak hairan jika kampung ini akan pupus dalam peta Sabah pada suatu hari nanti. Apapun yang terjadi, kami mengharapkan penduduk di kampung ini akan menjalani kehidupan yang lebih baik dan sempurna ditempat yang baru nanti.

Mantanani Island

Pulau Mantanani consists of three islands namely Pulau Mantanani Besar, Pulau Mantanani Kecil and Pulau Lungisan, a small island just off the western shore of Pulau Mantanani Besar. Pulau Mantanani Besar is about 3 km across and 1.5 km at its widest point. Sandy, calcareous beaches surround the island, except on its northern side. Pulau Mantanani Kecil is a thin island 2.5 km by 0.7 km. The island is composed mostly of limestone bluffs and rocky shores, with little strand or kerangas vegetation (Sheldon, 1983). Pulau Lungisan is a 40 m high limestone stack covered with low trees and steep slopes close to Pulau Mantanani Besar.
